SPIRITUAL, MORAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EDUCATION
UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF. UNDERSTANDING OTHERS. FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE WORLD.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) education supports young people to explore who they are, what matters to them, how they relate to others and their place within the wider world.
Our approach gives learners space to ask questions, reflect, explore different perspectives and develop their understanding through discussion, creativity and real-world experiences.

WHAT DOES SMSC EDUCATION MEAN?
🌱 SPIRITUAL
Spiritual development is not necessarily religious. It can provide opportunities for young people to explore:
Exploring identity and what matters to you
Personal beliefs, values and perspectives
Reflection and self-awareness
Meaning, purpose and aspirations
Wonder and curiosity about the world
Creativity, imagination and appreciation of nature, art and culture
Young people can explore their own perspectives while developing respect and curiosity towards the beliefs, values and experiences of others.
⚖️ MORAL
Moral development helps young people think about their choices, responsibilities and the impact of their actions.
Learners can explore:
Right and wrong
Choices and consequences
Responsibility
Fairness and justice
Ethical dilemmas
Respect for rules and the law
Understanding different viewpoints
Making informed decisions
Through discussion and real-life scenarios, learners are encouraged to consider different perspectives and develop their ability to make thoughtful, informed choices.
🤝 SOCIAL
Social development is about participating positively with other people and understanding our role within society.
Learners can develop:
Communication
Relationships
Teamwork
Empathy
Respect
Conflict resolution
Boundaries
Community participation
Democracy and having a voice
Understanding how we contribute to society
This can include opportunities to develop communication and relationship skills, explore how communities work and consider how young people can participate and contribute.
🌍 CULTURAL
Cultural development helps learners understand and appreciate their own identity and the diverse world around them.
Learners can explore:
Their own identity and heritage
Other cultures and traditions
Different beliefs and perspectives
Art, music, literature and creativity
Diversity
Similarities and differences between people
Their local, national and global communities
Creative experiences can provide a powerful way to explore culture, identity and different perspectives.
LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
SMSC can be explored through a range of creative, practical and experiential activities, including:
🎨 CREATIVE ARTS
Art, photography, music, film, poetry, storytelling and creative writing.
💬 DISCUSSION & DEBATE
Exploring real-world questions, ethical issues and different viewpoints.
🌍 CULTURE & IDENTITY
Exploring heritage, traditions, communities, diversity and lived experiences.
🗳️ YOUTH VOICE
Developing confidence to express opinions, make choices and have a meaningful voice in decisions.
🤝 SOCIAL ACTION
Identifying issues that matter to young people and exploring ways to make a positive contribution.
🌱 REFLECTION
Developing self-awareness, exploring values and thinking about aspirations and purpose.
BRITISH VALUES
SMSC education can also support learners to understand the fundamental British values of:
Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
These can be explored naturally through discussion, creative projects, social action, community participation and everyday learning.
DEVELOPING CONFIDENT, ACTIVE CITIZENS
SMSC education can help young people develop self-awareness, empathy, communication, critical thinking, respect and a stronger sense of belonging.
For learners who have experienced barriers to education, it can provide meaningful opportunities to explore their identity, develop their voice, understand different perspectives and recognise how they can contribute to the world around them.
UNDERSTAND → QUESTION → REFLECT → EXPRESS → PARTICIPATE
